If you enjoy intimate musical gatherings where stories matter as much as the songs, IBTIDA – Ek Mehfil: Archival Season 3 in Bengaluru is one of the most exclusive cultural experiences arriving in the city this year.

On 18 April 2026, legendary singer Usha Uthup will headline a rare, close-knit musical mehfil designed for just around 200 guests. This evening recreates the traditional baithak format, where the artist and listeners share the same intimate space.

In other words, you’ll be sitting just a few feet away as one of India’s most iconic voices sings, tells stories, and revisits moments from a career that spans more than five decades.

Here’s everything you need to know before attending this event.

What Is IBTIDA – Ek Mehfil?

’IBTIDA – Ek Mehfil’ is a curated cultural gathering built around the idea of reviving the traditional mehfil experience.

Historically, mehfils were private musical gatherings where artists performed in intimate settings rather than grand stages. Guests sat close to the performer, conversations flowed naturally, and music felt personal.

IBTIDA recreates this format for modern audiences where each event is intentionally limited in size so that the performer and listeners can share a meaningful connection.

For Archival Season 3, the theme is “Qissa”, which focuses on storytelling. You can enjoy an evening that blends live music with personal anecdotes, reflections, and memories from the artist’s life and career.

In Bengaluru, that living archive of music and stories will be Usha Uthup herself.

What to expect from the Show?

Few artists represent the evolution of modern Indian music quite like Usha Uthup does. Over the past five decades, she has performed everything from jazz standards and pop to Bollywood hits and multilingual stage performances.

Her journey began in the late 1960s singing in nightclubs, eventually transforming her into one of India’s most recognizable voices. Along the way she became famous not just for her music but for her signature style with Kanjeevaram sarees, sneakers, bold bindis, and an unmistakable stage presence.

Her influence on Indian pop culture has been widely recognized, including the Padma Bhushan, one of India’s highest civilian honours. At IBTIDA, you won’t just hear her sing. You’ll hear the stories behind the songs.

The seating arrangement follows a gadda-style baithak, where guests sit on comfortable floor cushions arranged around the performance area. The atmosphere is intentionally calm and immersive with the focus purely on the voice, the music, and the conversation between the performer and the room.

The evening unfolds slowly over about three and a half hours, allowing space for music, storytelling, and reflection.
